Picture this: It’s early 2026, and thousands of business owners are scrambling to get ready for Making Tax Digital (MTD). Meanwhile, you’re sitting back, relaxed, because you’ve already mastered the system. Sounds nice, right?
Be Part of Shaping the Future
Early adopters get a unique opportunity to:
- Influence how the system works
- Get direct support from HMRC
- Help shape the future of tax reporting
- Test different software solutions without pressure
What is MTD?
HMRC introduced Making Tax Digital in order to make the UK tax system as sleek as possible. It’s their aim to ensure that individuals and businesses get their tax filed correctly. By streamlining the tax system and going digital they aim to eliminate human errors.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is coming in 2026. It’s essentially making digital bookkeeping a mandatory requirement for sole traders and landlords with income (not profits) above the relevant thresholds. They will need to file quarterly updates of income and expenditure to HMRC using MTD compliant software.
What you need to know
2026 is the big kick-off (April 6th to be exact):
- Got a business or property bringing in over £50k? Then this will apply to you.
- We’re talking about your 2024/25 income to see if you need to comply.
- Time to go digital with those records and quarterly updates
2027 brings the next wave:
- Income over £30k? Then this will apply to you
- This includes your combined property and self-employed income
- Based on what you earn in 2025/26
2028 for those sole traders and landlords with income over £20K!
